Who Counts as a Domestic Worker?
Domestic workers include anyone employed in a private household: housemaids, cooks, nannies, gardeners, drivers, and caregivers. They are registered through the domestic labor system and work under a sponsor (kafeel) rather than a corporate employer.
Indemnity Formula for Domestic Workers
The calculation uses the same structure as private sector employees:
Daily Wage = Monthly Salary ÷ 26- First 5 years: 15 days × daily wage × years of service
- After 5 years: 30 days × daily wage × additional years
- Maximum cap: 18 months of total salary
Resignation vs Termination
| Service Length | If You Resign |
|---|---|
| Under 3 years | 0% — no indemnity |
| 3 to 5 years | 50% of calculated amount |
| 5 to 10 years | 66.67% (two-thirds) |
| 10+ years | 100% — full entitlement |
If the sponsor terminates the contract without valid cause, the worker receives 100% indemnity regardless of service length (after 1 year minimum).
How to Claim Your Indemnity
- Request a final settlement breakdown from your sponsor before departure
- Ensure unused annual leave is calculated and paid separately
- If the sponsor refuses payment, file a complaint with PAM (manpower.gov.kw)
- Keep copies of your contract, salary receipts, and residency documents
